Baptism

CONGRATULATIONS! You are exploring the possibility of Baptism for your child! This is a wonderful decision you have made, and an important step in the faith life of your child and your family as a whole.

We are delighted to have this opportunity to share with you in the journey of raising them in faith. Raising a child takes great effort and commitment, as does living a Christian life, and so we want to do all we can to support you and encourage you in passing faith in Jesus Christ on to them. You want the best for them, so also do we.

Prior to the actual date of baptism, all parents are required to participate in “baptismal instruction”. The process for Baptismal Preparation is three 1 hour sessions, plus a visit from either Rev. Gloria or Rev. Carl.

Baptismal Preparation takes place on Sunday morning from 9:00am to 10:00am. Parents are encouraged to invite their sponsors. Parents are also most welcome to bring their children with them during the instruction times. Parents will receive a letter confirming the dates of the preparation sessions.

  • Session 1 The Baptismal Covenant
  • Session 2 The Baptismal Vows
  • Session 3 The Baptismal Promises

*** All sessions are held at the Church - in the basement “Boardroom” ***

We look forward to seeing you, and are very happy to celebrate with you as bring your child into the Christian family and into the Church of God. If you have any other concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Blessings and congratulations,
The Church Family of St. John’s

Expectations for Baptism for People Who Live Away From North Sydney

Do you have family or friends that live away but plan to have a child baptized when they come home on holidays? Then, please, give them this important information.

“Baptism should be understood as initiation into membership in the Christian Community. In the case of infant baptism, emphasis should be placed on pastoral discipline with the view to the nurturing of baptized children into responsible membership of the church.” (Bishop’s Guidelines for Baptismal Discipline).

What this means is that anyone, particularly infants, are brought through baptism into the Body of Christ. As we nurture and bring up children to learn to live and be in the world, we also must nurture and bring up children in faith and to know their place within the congregation. Therefore, there are expectations: that the church / clergy are notified a minimum of two months before the next scheduled baptismal service; that the parents and sponsors will attend a local church which will be their spiritual home; that the parents and sponsors will enter into a time of catechesis (instruction in the faith) usually with an identified baptismal preparation team and /or the clergy of that parish.

For parents who are coming ‘home’ to have the child baptized the above expectations will be met through their local Anglican Church. A written commendation from the rector of that congregation stating the family’s participation through the catechetical process and church attendance will ensure baptism can take place at St. John the Baptist, North Sydney.
